Many transitioning households in the Midlands move into empty units, which impedes healing and stability. According to the 2025 Point-in-Time Count (MACH), over 1,000 individuals—including 190+ families with children—experienced homelessness in the Columbia area on one night. Emergency shelters assist survivors but more than half move into unfurnished spaces. The City estimates 40% of renting households are cost-burdened, unable to afford basic furnishings, and 75% of recently rehoused families lack essential home goods. While agencies may offer furniture “banks” or basic household goods, none in the Columbia region emphasize beauty, coherence, and intentional home design as core strategies for dignity and recovery. Filling this gap can improve mental health, family cohesion, and long-term housing retention for those most vulnerable.
